“Beards, moustaches and sideburns.” Follow lesson 5 by Maestro Restelli

lesson N°5

Beards, moustaches and sideburns, a trend that's been with us for more than four decades

If we want an actor's face to reflect the person of the character more markedly, and if we want the actor to emerge as a recognisable personage, we must provide his or her face with certain unmistakable traits. After his fully detailed explanations of the process of top-class wigmaking, on the strength of his experience at the Teatro alla Scala in Milan over four decades, Franco shall now show us how to make beards, moustaches and sideburns.

Top quality beards

To make beards, Franco uses a chin-piece. cinematographic tulle, tacks, a hammer and crêpe - curled hair on two rows of weaving.

On the chin-piece the Maestro draws the outline of the beard, and he positions the tulle with the vertical weave. Then, in order to fully stretch the tulle, he tacks it down on both sides, turns the chin-piece and does the finishing work under the chin.

Imitating Franco's movements, we can position the crêpe in the carder and, with the crochet hooks, we start to insert the hairs. As we saw when looking at how wigs are made, here too, the join must not be too distinctly marked and “delineated”. The beard which is thick will gradually thin out toward the edges of the drawing. Franco tells us that to produce a perfect beard we must follow the weave of the tulle. This will confer a natural quality upon the end product.

Top quality moustaches.

The Teatro alla Scala's workshops produce not only beards but also moustaches and sideburns. Franco's meticulous approach, hair after hair, leads to a fully completed form for perfect moustaches.

On completion, the moustaches are cut and curled for a natural end result.
